7th Grade Language Arts

Everybody walks past a thousand story ideas every day. The good writers are the ones who see five or six of them.

7th Grade Language Arts- Program Description

In 7th Grade Language Arts, students will develop and improve competencies as articulated in the Common Core State Standards for writing and language arts, grade 7.  Students will become proficient in four  overarching areas of writing: (1) text types and purposes,  (2) production and distribution of writing; (3) research to build and present knowledge, and (4) range of writing.  Their writing will demonstrate understanding and application of the conventions of standard English, knowledge of language, and the acquisition of vocabulary.

(1) Students will write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. They will write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content. They will also write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.

(2)  Students will produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. With some guidance and support from peers and adults, they will develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed. They will use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing,  to link to and cite sources, as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

(3) Students will conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.  They will gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; students will assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation. They will draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

(4) Students will write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

(5) In their writing, and when assessed on grammar and mechanical skills in isolation, students will demonstrate a reasonable command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage. They will also determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 7 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.

In 7th grade language arts, students will complete research to answer questions and will improve in their ability to communicate formally, in writing, for a variety of purposes.  Their writing will demonstrate coherence and planning, command of the conventions of standards English grammar, usage, and mechanics, and an expanded vocabulary necessary to communicate increasingly complex ideas.
